TestDisk is a free open source software which helps recovering data from a corrupt usb flash drive. Recently my flash drive got corrupted, and was asking to be formatted under windows
once plugged in. I tried opening the pen drive under several operating
systems including windows xp, vista, windows 7, fedora, ubuntu etc. But
in most of them, “Insert a Disk into drive x” and “Drive is not
formatted” error was popping up.As the data in my removable drive was not that critical, I started experimenting with different free data recovery softwares. Out of them, TestDisk, turned out to be the best in recovering my lost FAT32 partition.
TestDisk Features:
Fix partition table and recover lost/deleted partition
Rebuild/Recover FAT32 boot sector
Fix FAT Tables
Rebuild/Recover NTFS boot sector
Undelete files from fat, ntfs and ext2 filesystem
Copy files from deleted partitions
Supported Operating systems: DOS, Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7, Linux, MacOS X etc
How to Recover Files using TestDisk:
Common
symptoms or errors seen when a drive gets corrupted is, Windows
Explorer shows primary partition as raw or unformatted and Windows
prompts this error message.“The drive is not formatted, do you want to format it now?”To recover a partition or repair a file system, you must run TestDisk with full administrator privileges. In Windows Vista, right click Testdisk.exe and select “run as administrator” option.
To recover partition from a media image or repair a filesystem image, run
testdisk image.dd to create a raw disk image
testdisk image.E01 to recover files from an Encase EWF image
testdisk 'image.*' if the Encase image is split into several files.
If the partition was reformatted into other file system use these steps given below:
run TestDisk,
select the hard disk and the partition type
choose Advanced
select the partition
choose Type,
enter the value corresponding to the previous filesystem
choose Boot
choose RebuildBS
List
If you can see your files, choose Write and confirm
In Analyse, choose to rewrite the partition with the correct partition type.

In general, hacking and information security is not just one
discipline, but a number of them, and today we will look into some of
the networking concepts.
In the last Hacker Fundamentals, we talked about the OSI model
as well as a little on TCP/IP and the protocols that make up the suite.
Now, we're going to expand on that now and take a look at the various
parts of a network that you might have heard about, but might not
understand.
We
already covered how your data travels the OSI model, layer by layer,
and talks with other machines on your local network. But how does that
data leave your network? How does it know where to go? What's going on
here?
Much of the 'talking' on a local network are broadcasts.
This computer is asking for the MAC address of another one, or asking
for a local IP address, or any number of things. But doesn't that mean
the Internet should be flooded with various broadcast noise all over the
place? As it turns out, no. You see, the job of a router is not only to
route traffic, but to stop broadcasts. To explain this concept fully,
let's look into some examples.
No routers were hurt in the writing of this article.
A Tale of Two Packets: Internal
If
you remember correctly, an IP address has two components, the network
section and the host section. A subnet mask separates the IP address
into those two segments (<network><host>). A
subnet is expressed just like an IP address in a four octet form, the
most common one being 255.255.255.0 where the '255' means those octets
are describing the network and the '0' is describing the host.
Let's
say you wanted to send data to another computer on your local network
at home. Your internal IP address in this example is 172.10.1.20 and your destination IP address is 172.10.1.30. Also, let's assume your subnet mask is a standard 255.255.255.0.
The
first thing that gets done is the computer looks at the address on the
packet being sent. It then compares its address with the destination
address. Notice the 172.10.1.x is the same on both, and the subnet mask has filled octets in the same locations as well ( 255.255.255.0).
This tells the computer that the destination is on the same network it
is on. Your computer knows it is host '20' and it needs to reach host
'30' and it doesn't need to go through a router to get there.
Now
your computer only needs to know the MAC address of host '30' to send
this data on its way. If you recall the Media Access Control address is a
physical layer function that addresses actual physical hardware on your
computer. In a nutshell, it works like an IP address, only on your
local network.
ARP!
To perform this feat, your computer sends out a broadcast message to everyone on the network called an ARP, or Address Resolution Protocol. It's like your PC yelling "HELLO! I am looking for the computer172.10.1.30".
Now each device on the network receives that message and looks at its own IP address in turn. The router (172.10.1.1)
sees it is not the one being looked for and drops the message. Other
computers on the network do the same thing until the computer that has
the IP of 172.10.1.30 gets it, checks its address, and sees they match. It then replies back to the sending computer of 172.10.1.20 saying "HEY! That's me and my MAC address isAA00:BC33:3211".
In
the picture below, the MAC address is called an "Ethernet address",
reflecting the fact that it's addressing for the physical layer.
However, common lingo is "MAC address".
Now
the sending computer has the internal IP and MAC address of the
receiving computer and can send its data over. But what happens if the
two addresses are not on the same network?
A Tale of Two Packets: External
Well,
it's not as simple when we have to cross other networks, as there is a
bit more going on behind the scenes, as you will see. Let's assume we
are sending the same data as before and our source IP address is 172.10.1.20 and our destination IP address is 192.168.0.100. You should immediately notice by the subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 that these two addresses are on separate networks. See, we are getting there.
Just
like in the first example, the sending computer looks at the
destination address and compares it to its own. However, this time there
is a problem—they don't match at all.
Now it knows that it can't
just send out an ARP message like before, because remember what happened
in the last example, when the routers address didn't match the address
being asked? It simply dropped the packet. This is how routers stop
broadcasts from traveling the entire Internet. In fact, without this
design, the Internet would be flooded with so many broadcast messages
from the millions of connected devices that it would crash and fail.
At this point, your computer knows an ARP just isn't going to cut it for the destination of 192.168.0.100, so it broadcasts another ARP. But this time is looks for what's called the default gateway. This is a node, or a router, that acts as an entry or exit point to another network.
Normally,
when a computer cannot find a route for an IP address, it will send it
along to the default gateway as a route of last resort. This is your
modem/router at home. Your router will reply saying, "YO! I am the default gateway and my MAC address is xxxx:xxxx:xxxx!"
Your
computer then adds the routers MAC address as the destination MAC
address to the packet, and sends it over to the router for safe travels.
Route Me Baby!
The router takes a
look at the packet and knows the source IP came from its own network.
But the destination is separate altogether. Because the destination is
not the same as the router's own internal IP address, it knows the
packet is not for it, but needs to travel through it.
The router then looks at its routing tables to find a way to get to the 192.168.0.x
network. It leaves the source and destination IP address information
inside the packet, and changes the new source MAC address to its own
address and the destination MAC address to the next node deducted from
the routing table.
This process continues over and over with each
router that picks up the packets looking at the addresses, seeing it's
not for their network and passing it along until it reaches the final
destination of 192.168.0.100.
That router will
strip of the source and destination MAC addresses that allowed the
packets to travel, and replace the source with its own. It then ARPs to
find the MAC address of the server being looked for and uses the reply
to add the final MAC address of that machine, then sends it along

If you've ever wondered how software pirates can take
software and crack it time and time again, even with security in place,
this small series is for you. Even with today's most advanced methods of
defeating piracy in place, it is still relatively easy to crack almost
any program in the world. This is mainly due to computer processes'
ability to be completely manipulated by an assembly debugger. Using
this, you can completely bypass the registration process by making it
skip the application's key code verification process without using a
valid key. This works because assembly allows you to speak directly to
the processor and force a skip over the registration process.
In this Null Byte,
let's go over how cracking could work in practice by looking at an
example program (a program that serves no purpose other than for me to
hack). I will not be walking you through how to actually crack a
legitimate program, because I can't just crack a program for
demonstration, but the techniques applied to my examples should give you
the foundation needed to create your own. At that point, it's a test of
your morals if you want to use your knowledge for good or bad.
Requirements
Windows (for examples only, debuggers exist across platforms)
A debugger installed: IDA, ollydbg, etc. (ollydbg will be used in examples)
Step 1 Test the Program
First,
run the program that you are attempting to reverse engineer and try to
activate it with a random key to verify that you need a valid software
key to proceed. This is to verify that we can come up with the keys.
Step 2 Run the Program in a Debugger
Run ollydbg.
Open up the program you wish to bypass with ollydbg.
Click the play button to run the program with the debugger attached.
Right click the CPU window, and click Search For > All intermodular calls.
Search for high interest DLLs. GETDLGITEMTEXT,
will be for dialog boxes, which get called when you try to enter a
software key. By stepping into the function with the debugger, we can
examine the registration specifically. SENDDLGITEM could be used as well.
Test
to see which one works to break out of the activation loop by right
clicking the DLL call and setting a breakpoint for all instances of that
call.
Resume
the program and enter any software key you feel like. If the debugger
breaks (pauses the program's execution) after entering your key, then
you know you found DLL in step 5.
Press F8 back in the CPU
window to force the next step until you get to the TEST EAX. EAX is the
return of a value, which means that a check is being performed here.
Upon examination, we can see that the EAX is checking for a number that
is not equal to a null value. This means that if it is replaced with
anything other than null, it will run.
Right-click the EAX and change it in hex value to 1, instead of 0.
Resume the program again, and you will have successfully activated the program. And for proof it was registered to me:

An internet connection has become a basic necessity in our modern lives. Wireless hot-spots (commonly known as Wi-Fi) can be found everywhere!
If
you have a PC with a wireless network card, then you must have seen
many networks around you. Sadly most of these networks are secured with a
network security key.
Have you ever wanted to use one of these
networks? You must have desperately wanted to check your mail when you
shifted to your new house. The hardest time in your life is when your
internet connection is down.
Cracking those Wi-Fi passwords is
your answer to temporary internet access. This is a comprehensive guide
which will teach even complete beginners how to crack WEP encrypted
networks, easily.

Now the interesting part... CRACKING!
Are you a visual learner?
How Are Wireless Networks Secured?
In
a secured wireless connection, internet data is sent in the form of
encrypted packets. These packets are encrypted with network security
keys. If you somehow manage to get hold of the key for a particular
wireless network you virtually have access to the wireless internet
connection
Broadly speaking there are two main types of encryptions used: WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy):
This
is the most basic form of encryption. This has become an unsafe option
as it is vulnerable and can be cracked with relative ease. Although this
is the case many people still use this encryption. WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access):
This
is the more secure alternative. Efficient cracking of the passphrase of
such a network requires the use of a wordlist with the common
passwords. In other words you use the old fashioned method of trial and
error to gain access. Variations include WPA-2 which is the most secure
encryption alternative till date. Although this can also be cracked
using a wordlist if the password is common, this is virtually
uncrackable with a strong password. That is, unless the WPA PIN is still
enabled (as is the default on many routers).
Hacking WEP
passwords is relatively fast, so we'll focus on how to crack them for
this guide. If the only networks around you use WPA passwords, you'll
want to follow this guide on how to crack WPA WiFi passwords instead.
What You'll Need...
A compatible wireless adapter:
This
is by far the biggest requirement. The wireless card of your computer
has to be compatible with the software CommVIew. This ensures that the
wireless card can go into monitor mode which is essential for capturing
packets.Click here to check if your wireless card is compatible
CommView for Wi-Fi :
This software will be used to capture the packets from the desired network adapter.Click here and download the software from the website.
Aircrack-ng GUI:
After capturing the packets this software does the actual cracking.Click here-Click here and download the software from the website.
A little patience is vital!!
Step 1: Setting Up CommView for Wi-Fi
Download
the zip file of CommView for Wi-Fi from the website. Extract the file
and run setup.exe to install CommView for Wi-Fi. When CommView opens for
the first time it has a driver installation guide. Follow the prompts
to install the driver for your wireless card.
Run CommView for Wi-Fi.
Click the play icon on the top left of the application window.
Start scanning for wireless networks.
CommView
now starts scanning for wireless networks channel by channel. After a
few minutes you will have a long list of wireless networks with their
security type and signal. Now it is time to choose your target network
Step 2: Selecting the Target Network and Capturing Packets
A few things to keep in mind before choosing the target wireless network
This tutorial is only for WEP encrypted networks.
So make sure you select a network with WEP next to its name
Choose a network with the highest signal.
Each network will have its details in the right column.
Make sure the WEP network you are choosing has the least the least dB (decibel) value.
Once you have chosen your target network, select it and click Capture to start capturing packets from the desired channel.
Now
you might notice that packets are being captured from all the networks
in the particular channel. To capture packets only from the desired
network follow the given steps.
Right click the desired network and click on copy MAC Address.
Switch to the Rules tab on the top.
On the left hand side choose MAC Addresses
Enable MAC Address rules
For 'Action' select 'capture' and for 'Add record' select 'both'.
Now paste the mac address copied earlier in the box below.
We
need to capture only data packets for cracking. Hence select D on the
bar at the top of the window and deselect M (Management packets) and C
(Control packets).
Now you have to save the packets so that they can be cracked later. To do this-
Go to the logging tab on top and enable auto saving.
Set Maximum Directory Size to 2000
Set Average Log File Size to 20.
Step 3: Waiting...
Now the boring part- WAITING! NOTE:
The amount of time taken to capture enough data packets depends on the
signal and the networks usage. The minimum number of packets you should
capture should be 100,000 for a decent signal.
After you think you have enough packets (at least 100,000 packets)
Go to the log tab and click on concatenate logs.
Select all the logs that have been saved.
Do not close CommView for Wi-Fi
Now navigate to the folder where the concatenated logs have been saved
Open the log file
Select File- Export -Wire shark tcpdump format and choose any suitable destination.
This will save the logs with a .cap extension to that location
Now the Interesting Part... CRACKING!
Download Aircrack-ng and extract the zip file.
Open the folder and navigate to 'bin'.
Run Aircrack-ng GUI
Choose WEP
Open your .cap file that you had saved earlier.
Click Launch.
In the command prompt type in the index number of your target wireless network.
Wait for a while .If everything goes fine the wireless key will be shown.
You
may also receive a request to try with more packets. In this case wait
until more packets have been captured and repeat the steps to be
performed after capturing packets
BEST OF LUCK
